Everyone who has ever been to Florence has marveled at the Palazzo Vecchio, the medieval palace constructed from 1299 to 1302: it now houses the City Hall. The original intent was to build this magnificent structure as a public building. But in 1540 Cosimo I de' Medici took one look at it and decided to oust the public and install his family.
